Nutrition Transition

How can textile patterns be designed as a visual language to communicate the seasonality and regional diversity of food?

Concept

With the globalised food system of our modern world, we are used to having all fruits and vegetables independent from seasons. The handful of mass-produced variety makes us forget about our abundant regional goods diversity.

The project tries to make this everyday but invisible issue visible. An equally everyday product – the textile – was chosen as an information carrier. Nutrition transition is a universel calendar for local fruits and vegetables. The pattern shows the seasonality of regional sorts. Each woven pattern is unique – another country generates another pattern.
